Photographs of Edinburgh 2011

Greyfriars Bobby Statue

The story of the Skye Terrier dog is world famous…

Bobby belonged to John Gray, who worked for the Edinburgh City Police as a night watchman, and the two were inseparable for about two years. Then, on the 15th February 1858, Gray died of Tuberculosis. He was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard, in the Old Town of Edinburgh. Bobby, who out lived John Gray by 14 years, is said to have spent the rest of life sitting on his master’s grave.

Scott Monument

The Scott Monument is a Victorian Gothic monument to Scottish author Sir Walter Scott. It is very difficult to get a good photograph of the detail in this monument because it is built from Binnie shale. The oil from this type of shale helped to glue the notoriously filthy atmosphere of Victorian Edinburgh to the tower, leaving it an unintended sooty-black colour.

This street entertainer had a large crowd of tourists around him, gathering to pay to have their photograph taken with him.

Mons Meg

Edinburgh Castle is an ancient fortress which, from its position atop Castle Rock, dominates the sky-line of the city of Edinburgh, and is Scotland's most famous (and most visited) landmark. Human habitation of the site is dated back as far as the 9th century BC. As it stands today though, few of the castle's structures pre-date the 16th century.

Edinburgh street scene

Due to its location at the bottom of a valley, it is extremely difficult to find a good angle to take a photo of Edinburgh’s Waverley Train Station.

I visited Edinburgh in 2011; these photos were taken in February 2011, when I was up there on a holliday trip. The city was wonderful, the weather was glorious, the tourists were only partly obnoxious, and full English breakfast were overpriced but acceptable! Here are some photos.
