"The house that Jack built"

Here is a “thumbnail sketch” on a plain sheet of ordinary sketchbook. This helps me establish the flow of the storyline. This is a very important stage in designing a painting.  I must quickly sketch a several of these until the idea feels right.

This is the house that Jack built.
This is the malt that lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the cat that killed the rat
That ate the malt that lay in the house that Jack built.
This is the dog that worried the cat
That killed the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.

This is the cow with the crumpled horn
That tossed the dog that worried the cat
That killed the rat that ate the malt
That lay in the house that Jack built.
